In the long run that’s probably a good thing, as the team is a few pieces away from true contention and could use another foundational piece from the draft - the team has a 56 percent chance of being in the league’s bottom 10 this season - but it still might be a disappointing reality check after an inspiring offseason. It could happen, and the team is obviously in a better position to do so than last season, but at this point it appears unlikely. The Rangers are probably not making the playoffs next season. Are the Rangers ready for prime time after a relatively short rebuild accelerated by a terrific offseason? Color me skeptical. I understand the optimism, but despite the strong offseason, the math doesn’t work like that - not if last year’s 78-point finish isn’t a true reflection of the team’s underlying talent by the end of it.
Add some progression from the team’s youth movement, and a successful 2019-20 campaign starts looking reasonable. Add that to last season’s 78-point finish and, boom, you get 90 points - very close to the playoffs. My model projects they improved their bottom line by six wins, the most of any team in the league. Bar none, the Rangers had the best offseason.
